Large-scale land acquisitions (LSLAs) have expanded rapidly in developing countries and promoted as a path way to accelerate agricultural transformation. Yet, credible evidence on their developmental and environmental impacts remains limited. This paper provides causal evidence on the effects of LSLAs on agricultural production and forest outcomes by exploiting spatial and temporal variation in the staggered implementation of LSLAs in Gambella, Ethiopia. We combine geo-referenced administrative records on land transactions (2000–2020) with high-resolution remote sensing data on crop production, forest cover, and land use. Using a heterogeneity robust difference-in-difference estimator, we find no evidence that LSLAs increase agricultural production or the share of crop land. In contrast, it leads to significant and persistent declines in tree cover and forest land share. This deforestation-production paradox suggests that, in settings characterized by weak oversight and insufficient infrastructure, poorly regulated large-scale investments can generate substantial environmental burden without delivering the anticipated structural transformation that justifies them.

This paper investigates how local governments in China respond to demographic shifts by reducing migration restrictions through Hukou reform. We construct a novel measure of reform intensity by combining a data driven approach with textual analysis of official policy documents. By quantifying the share of pre-reform migrants who would qualify for local urban Hukou under the most recent settlement criteria, our measure captures the endogenous constraints embedded in local settlement policies. Using this measure, we estimate the impact of local population aging on Hukou policy changes. We find that cities with higher aging levels are more likely to lower thresholds for migrant settlement, with stronger effects in prefectures facing lower fertility rates. Mechanism analysis further highlights the role of population aging as a driver of labor market deregulation and urban development.

本文研究发现2017年秋冬季京津冀地区大气污染治理和督查显著改进了该地区的空气质量，PM2.5相对于平均值下降了19%;AQI指数下降了15%。在这次环境治理行动中，环保督察对于空气质量改善的即期影响十分明显，但环境政策在有效抑制污染的同时也对当地经济造成了显著的负面影响。环保治理政策使得受影响城市2017年的GDP增速下降了大约13%，工业生产增速降幅约为24%，但是这些城市的公共财政与居民收入增速在短期没有明显变化。

劳动力回流是理解户籍改革对空间经济结构影响的关键。已有研究大多依据是否有户籍地以外的生活经历来定义回流， 忽视了大规模的户籍迁移群体。本文利用 2017 年与 2019 年中国家庭金融调查数据， 对回流进行了更准确的测度和区分， 分析发现: 跨市回流群体在劳动人口中的比重超过跨市流动人口占比; 回流人口多从经济发达地区回到欠发达的户籍所在地的城镇地区; 回流群体在外务工期间和回到户籍地后的稳定性都不高。
